(en) In a land of beauty, wonder and danger, she would follow a dream, fall in love and risk her life to save the mountain gorillas from extinction.
A Kentucky woman, Dian Fossey, is inspired by an anthropologist Louis Leakey to devote her life to the study of primates. Travelling into deepest Africa, Fossey becomes fascinated with the lives and habits of the rare mountain gorillas of the Rwandan jungle. She becomes so preoccupied with her vocation that she loses the opportunity of a romance with National Geographic photographer Bob Campbell.
Appalled by the poaching of the gorillas for their skins, hands, and heads, Fossey complains to the Rwandan government, which dismisses her, claiming that poaching is the only means by which some of the Rwandan natives can themselves survive. She rejects this, and dedicates herself to saving the African Mountain gorilla from illegal poaching and likely extinction. To this end she forms and leads numerous anti-poaching patrols, and even burns down the poachers' villages and stages a mock execution of one of the offenders. Fossey is mysteriously murdered on December 26, 1985, in the bedroom of her cabin.

I shot the footage a few years ago at Wild Earth, an eco-activist camp on Vancouver Island. The footage is standard definition. Since then, I have shot shocking clear cuts in Oregon using a Panasonic AG-HVX200A. Below are some photos of that shoot. The archival footage comes from Archive.org, Pickaxe and Qwatsinas’ collection. The music is by stig inge oy.

(en) Koyaanisqatsi is a documentary (of sorts). It is also a visual concert of images set to the haunting music of 'Phillip Glass' . While there is no plot in the traditional sense, there is a definate scenario. The film opens on ancient native American cave drawings, while the soundtrack chants "Koyaanisqatsi" which is a Hopi indian term for "life out of balance". The film uses extensive time lapse photography (which speeds images up) and slow motion photography to make comparisons between different types of physical motion. In one of the first examples, we see cloud formations moving (sped up) intercut with a montage of ocean waves (slowed down) and in such a way we are able to see the similarities of movement between these natural forces. This technique of comparison exists throughout the film, and through it we learn more about the world around us. The film progresses from purely natural environments to nature as affected by man, and finally to man's own manmade environment, devoid of nature yet still following the patterns of natural flow as depicted in the beginning of the film, yet in chaos and disarray. Through this the film conveys its key message, which is Koyaanisqatsi: life out of balance; crazy life; life in turmoil; life disintegrating; a state of life that calls for another way of living.
(cz) Strhující umělecký dokument KOYAANISQATSI (1983) je předchůdcem u nás dobře známého snímku POWAQQATSI (1988). Oba filmy jsou součástí zamýšlené trilogie o stavu tohoto světa. Koyaanisqatsi začal režisér Godfrey Reggio realizovat v roce 1974 jako svou prvotinu v době, kdy mu bylo třiatřicet let a kdy měl za sebou dvacetileté působení v Řádu křesťanských bratří. Příprava, natáčení a střih si vyžádaly skoro deset let. Pod záštitou Institutu pro oblastní výchovu (IRE - Institute for Regional Education) stvořil autor třiaosmdesátiminutový snímek bez jediného slova, v němž hraje důležitou roli vedle obrazu i minimalistická hudba Philipa Glasse. Název a idea celého projektu vzešla z kultury indiánského kmene Hopi, žijícího na území Arizony a ohroženého vyhynutím. Od starců tohoto kmene získal Reggio nejen povolení užít slova jeho jazyka pro názvy svých filmů, ale i inspiraci v podobě věšteckých zpěvů. "Koyaanisqatsi" znamená "život vyvedený z rovnováhy", nebo také "způsob života, který volá po změně". Reggiův filosofický esej má obecnou platnost. Vypovídá o světě, který oplývá bohatstvím a krásou, nad níž se tají dech - ale také o planetě, kterou její obyvatelé, lidé, přeměňují pozvolna k obrazu svému, a tím ubližují přírodě, jejíž součástí jsou ovšem také oni sami. Vypovídá o stereotypu života ve městech, o industrializaci, o lhostejnosti a o samotě, a také o odlidštěnosti, o letech a pádech. Podobně jako Powaqqatsi je i tento film obrazově i hudebně rozdělen do několika pasáží, jež Reggio s Glassem dramaticky vygradovali. Vzniklo ohromující dílo, jež ve světě vzbudilo velký ohlas a jež i přes značný časový odstup přesvědčivě vypovídá o tomto světě.

(cz) Dokument režiséra Roberta Kane Pappase ‘Orwell se otáčí v hrobě’ je skvělá kritická sonda do médií, kdysi bašty Americké demokracie. Ptá se, zda Amerika vstoupila do Orwellovského světa “newspeaku”, kde se ze lží snadno stává pravda a ukazuje o čem média nerada mluví: Sama o sobě.
Přesto, že dokument vzhledem k roku výroby neukazuje zrovna nejnovější dění ve světě, můžeme si udělat představu, jak se dá zahýbat se zpravodajstvím. Nejsou to jednotliví reportéř, ale právě vlastíci nadnárodních korporací, kteří ovládají desítky velkých televizních stanic. Jsou to právě tito lidé, kteří rozhodují, co se objeví ve večerních zprávách a jsou ti ti samí lidé, kteří nezastávají zájmy většiny v žádné společnosti.
